Some Sculptures by Peter Horn

Daddy and Adella

El Cristo de Peter Horn

Accompanied by our friends, Franz and Maria Elena, Artie, Adella and Daddy and I drove north to San Felipe to see a large crucifix that Franz's father, Peter Horn carved in 1935 out of a huge tree that had fallen in the churchyard. He did this carving for free for this poor town on the condition that they move the tree trunk up to the top of a certain hill. He spent 40 days carving the Cristo, and during this time he didn't allow anyone else to come up to see his work. The hill is now a shrine, and most people walk up the zigzag path with the stations of the cross along the way. At the top there is a wide area with benches and an altar facing the cross where masses are said.

This memorial plaque and a sculpture of Peter Horn done by his wife were placed near the crucifix 50 years later.

Peter Horn created around 3000 religious sculptures, and he worked in wood, stone and metal. Most of these works are in Chile, but there are also some in his native Germany.

At the left are a crucifix and Madonna and Christ statue in a church in Santiago. There were many of his works in this church, including painted stations of the Cross, carved statues and surface carvings in wood and stone and some work in metal.
