From North to South: New Hampshire to Florida

August to October 2008

August

While in New Hampshire, we enjoyed a visit from Humberto and his wife Kris. Artie and Humberto worked together in Dallas in the late 1990s.   We also took a trip to Cape Cod, where our friends Sherry and Stewart have a beautiful home that they recently remodeled.

Sherry was a Syracuse University dormitory friend of Margy's from the late 1960s, so we've been friends for decades. They toured us around the Cape, and made a memorable "pizza on the grill" for us while there.

A day-trip north, less than 2 hours from our condo, allowed us to enjoy New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee. Located in the Lakes District in the center of the state, this giant lake is 182 miles around and has 253 islands.

Artie's brother, Larry, has a racquetball wall in his back yard, where most weekends there's a friendly game. Nephew Danny, Larry's son at right, is about to slam the blue ball (look closely and you'll see it!) for a spectacular shot. At least that is how we remember it.
The routine weekend crew includes friends Scott and Sam, at left, with Danny and Larry at right. They all look like winners!

The golf course community at our condo is beautiful for taking walks. When Danny, Roberta, Maddie and Max visited one day, we all took to the streets, not necessarily in the same direction!

Being near family enabled us to enjoy family cook-outs on the grill at Danny's house, located about 45 minutes from us.

We bought bikes for our NH rides, and Margy picked this special "bell."

On a trip to Michigan, we stopped first in Syracuse NY, where we had spent our University years and nearly a decade beyond. Dear friends included Walt, Bethyl, Anoush and Ernie.   Walt was Artie's gymnastic coach at SU. He and his wife Bethyl were like surrogate parents for Artie while he was at school.

In addition to seeing gymnasts Walt and Ernie, more gymnastic connections were made in Buffalo NY. We saw Dean, a former High School and then later Syracuse University champion gymnast. Dean was the reason Artie went to Syracuse University. Shown above is Dean signing one of his books on behavior psychology, and a mid 1960s photo of Dean at the University gym where he specialized in the high bar.
Shown here are Dean and his wife, Cindy, with their daughters Rebecca (in photo frame), Claire and Rachel.

We stayed in Buffalo for several relaxing days with nephew Peter, his wife Dawn and their son Griffin. It was during the Summer Olympics and we watched Michael Phelps get his eighth gold medal on their wide-screen TV. Exciting races!

We crossed the Niagara River and enjoyed the Falls while waiting to pass through customs on our way into Canada. The Canadian highways brought us to Michigan, where we planned to spend one evening with Company friends at the annual Plant Managers Meeting in Montague.

Corporate President and CEO Chuck (left) and Manufacturing Vice President Steve (right) were honoring 20-year service recipients, including the Chilean Plant Manager, Manuel (center, white shirt). We were proud to be there to attend this important recognition event. Some of the comments were more like "roasts."

As a new Plant Manager, Manuel is doing great.

It was also an opportunity to see Paul, who worked with Artie in North Carolina in the late 1980s.

On our way back to New Hampshire, we stayed overnight at Margy's sister Bibba's house in Owego NY. It's a beautiful 1855 home along the Susquehanna River.

The final stop before getting back to NH was at Margy's other sister's house, in Johnson City NY, about an hour east of Bibba. We enjoyed seeing the landscaping around Kathy and Bob's house, before heading home.

September

A day-trip to Maine, three hours north, to nephew Stevie and Nadine's house enabled us to see the progress they have made on building their dream.

Their labor by hand, together and with love, vision and persistence, has created an outstanding and spacious home.

Meanwhile, on a smaller scale, nephew Danny constructed a wood shed in his backyard. The rest of us either did some hands-on help and/or on-site supervision. Many hands makes lighter work, or --- too many cooks?

A long day working, and a fun family project. By dusk the goal was met. Targeted completion before winter!

One afternoon while we were still in the north, we met a new family member, Maggie. She married cousin David while we were out of the States. It was fun to meet her, share family stories and see photos of their wedding.

Fall comes to New Hampshire early. By mid-September the trees started changing color and we headed south.

First stop was in New Jersey to see John and Lori, old friends from Syracuse.

Here's John's latest toy!

John, Lori and their baby, Daisy!

Within 20 minutes from John and Lori's house, we visited Artie's cousins. Next to us, left to right, are Barbara and Jackie, Charles and Sharyn (whose house we were in), and bottom row are the Moms, Virginia and Alice. We had lots of laughs and caught up on family stories that we had missed while in South America.

Continuing south in NJ, we briefly visited with Artie's Mom, Adella, brother Ray, niece Jill and her son Brian, plus Darlene, Alan and sister-in-law Shelley. A quick stop, but entertaining. Great to be near family.

Our Syracuse University 40-year reunion in Avalon New Jersey was hosted by Charlie and Elaine (below) the weekend of September 19-21, 2008. Five couples gathered from various places to catch-up on past decades.

Bill's wife, Debbie, showed us some of her professional stained glass art. Beautiful!

Some, like Lee and Artie, relaxed on the shore, while others, like Den, Charlie and Bill played in the surf. All of us had fun!

Margy really had a good time with one of the arcade games on the boardwalk. Charlie proudly shows his stuff! The "kid" spirit is alive and well in all of us.

Don't ask what this was about.

Relaxing on the deck, sharing photos and stories.

The guys with a sign for Alex, in Venezuela, who couldn't join us, but was with us in spirit.

We had a great time and agreed to not wait another 40 years for the next one!

From NJ we drove to Maryland, where we stayed a few days with Dennis and Cari. While there, we drove over to John's house, which looks out to the Chesapeake Bay. John showed us his garden pumpkin and then we all went out kayaking.

Margy's cousin Louise and husband Dave live in the same town as John so we stopped in for a quick visit with them too.

Joanna, a daughter of Artie's cousin Selma, also lives in Maryland. She, her husband Arlindo and their son Jonas met us for a fast-food dinner at a local mall. Talk about grabbing it all in!

We will be seeing Selma farther down on this page!

Ken (a high school buddy of Artie's) and Jo graciously hosted us at their home in Virginia. We always enjoy seeing them and catching up.

Our next-to-the-last stop on our trip south was with Howard in his home in South Carolina. Howard was Artie's boss when he was working in Ohio in the late 1970's. This was the second time we've seen him this year!

Our final stop on the way to Florida from New Hampshire was near Atlanta, Georgia. We stayed with Artie's cousin Selma and her husband Noel.

To stay in shape, we joined Sel on her morning walk through the hills of their beautiful community. And those hills are steep!

Sel cooked delicious meals for us, which we enjoyed with them and with their friends. Selma and Noel were wonderful hosts. We relaxed in their house and got to visit local attractions with them, despite the gas crisis.

It was amazing to see most gas stations with no price showing, and no cars at any pumps. The few that were open had long lines waiting to fill-up. Noel's friend alerted us where to fill-up.

A hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico had shut down USA refineries, causing this short-term but critical crisis.

We especially enjoyed the leisure time we had just to talk, laugh, and share moments and memories together. We look forward to many more such opportunities.

While in Atlanta, we fit in an evening together with Louise and Les, friends from Dallas in the mid- to late-1990s. Louise used to volunteer with Margy at a local hospital, baby cuddling, and Les was Artie's boss.

October

October was a relatively quiet month, catching up from all the travels and visits. At home again in Florida, we were thrilled to have a brief visit by John. During the day, his Jacksonville sister Mary Beth joined us (photo left). The next week, Noel and Selma stopped in for an overnight visit, shown here studying old family photographs.

At month-end we were off traveling again for ten days in Chile and Easter Island!
