Kitchen Renovation: May through September

In May, we decided that the kitchen and laundry room needed to be renovated. The old tile floor and aged cabinets had become more and more annoying, thus detracting greatly from our enjoying the apartment. We started going to showrooms to see what was available and what we liked. Once we selected the style of cabinets that we wanted, we worked with their kitchen designer to figure out exactly what configuration would be perfect. We were finally satisfied with the design and signed the contract to order them on July 4th.

The kitchen design studio, ABS, at right, is where we selected the kitchen cabinets. Then while waiting the two months for the units to be ready, we continued searching for small items, like faucets, and larger items like the floor covering.

We picked the ceramic tiles for the floor and laundry room at another specialty center shown here at right. All that remained was getting ready for the installation. That was not easy!

The existing kitchen had to be completely emptied for the removal of the old cabinets and flooring.

Mónica had to survive for weeks with all kitchen items in the living room and dining room, and dust everywhere.

The old small white floor tiles were removed, and foundations installed for the new cabinets. Several of the wall tiles also had to be replaced.

On September 4th the new larger dark tiles started to be installed. What a new and better look developed!

After several months of waiting, the changes were suddenly taking shape. All the old cabinets were gone, a new oven vent was run to exhaust directly outside the kitchen, the new floors were installed and the last step was about to begin.

On September 14th the cabinets quickly were installed and the kitchen was finally ready to be re-organized and put back into operation.

There was dust everywhere after the work. But with detailed cleaning the apartment soon was back in order.

The finished product was worth the preparation, time, and disruption to routine living. A great new kitchen!

This new kitchen meets the standards of the rest of the apartment. We all enjoy it, and Mónica's great cooking!
