Adella's 5th trip to Chile

 November 19 to December 1, 2004

Mónica and Gustavo accompanied us to pick up Artie's mom. Coming from the cold north, Adella arrived on Friday, declare a special holiday in Santiago in order to cut down on traffic for the opening the Asian Pacific Economic Conference (APEC 2004), which included 21 global leaders in our city at one time.

You might recognize one of the world leaders who was in Santiago for APEC. Saturday afternoon, Artie went to the CEO Summit to hear this man speak. Later at home, Artie pointed out the hand that shook the hand of President Bush!
On Sunday we left with Mónica and Adella for a road trip to the south. Our first stop was Curicó where we visited Tita and Arturo and then went with them to the beautiful Siete Tazas (7 pots).

Arturo and Adella enjoyed chatting in the car, each in their own language, while the rest of us hiked to the falls. Later, back at Tita's house, after our tea, Arturo's 95 year old mother dropped by to meet Artie's 90 year old mom.

The next morning, we thought we were just going to see a cherry farm belonging to Mónica's friend, but there was much more! Victor showed his century old wine bodega, European deer, horses and various fruit orchards.

We were fascinated to learn how they grow certain Fuji apples inside individual bags to make them perfect for export to some countries in Asia. We wondered if this is where that $5 apple we saw in a store in Tokyo in 1995 came from!

On Tuesday we toured the plant at Talcahuano.

Mónica was thrilled to meet people in the plant who had worked with and for her dad over 30 years ago.

At the right, Adella stands in front of the mountain of salt used as a raw material at the plant.

What a great way to demonstrate Responsible Care® (Conducta Responsable): take your 90 year old mom safely through a clean and well run chemical plant! Adella was proud to meet the dedicated Oxy team.

Later in the week, on a shopping trip, Adella had some of her rings resized and got to talk to a bird that reminded her of the pet parrot of her childhood.

Another day we visited a handicrafts show and bumped into a friend that Adella had met on previous trips.

Adella enjoyed being a guest of honor at our annual Thanksgiving (Acción de Gracias) party at the country club on Friday. We all enjoyed the wonderful food and company.

Our Thanksgiving banner was one of the decorations the Famulas brought to our first Thanksgiving dinner party at the club. Enjoying the leftover food is another favorite tradition.

Speaking of food, Adella enjoyed meals with more of our friends she had come to know on previous trips.

Food for the heart is hugs with old and new friends!

We all went to Oxy's Family Day on the 27th. It was lots of fun with music, games for all ages, a big swimming pool, a magician, a clown and a big rabbit who made us laugh. There were snacks, drinks and a nice barbecue luncheon. Artie gave a speech as usual, but it was short! Adella felt honored to be recognized. At the end of the day, Santa came and handed out gifts to the children and to each family. Adella sat on his lap!
