In and Around Puerto Varas
For the first 2 nights of this summer vacation in February, we stayed at Hotel Colonos del Sur in Puerto Varas,
a picturesque city in the southern part of Chile which is famous for its lakes and volcanos. Our room is the one
at the top left with the small porch. We enjoyed the panoramic view below. |

Osorno Volcano
| Taking advantage of the beautiful day when we arrived in Puerto Varas, we took an afternoon tour with a visit to
the nearby volcano, Osorno. |
Along the way, we made a number of stops to observe the scenery and to get close to some of the native birds
and animals.

Llamas look friendly but watch out, they spit when you get too close.

The pudu is the world's smallest deer. This is an adult! |
| |
The condor is the national bird of Chile. With an 8 foot wingspan, they are more impressive to see in nature,
but you can't get this close!

Artie soared like a bird.

| We saw a lot of beautiful scenery on our trip on the Osorno Volcano. We walked around in the National Park but
we didn't climb up to the snowy top of the volcano. |
Even though this trip was in February, the height of the summer in the southern hemisphere, there is snow on the
tops of the mountains. The air is thin and cold. We were happy to let our camera's zoom feature give us a closer
look at the snowy peak, rather than keep climbing.

We were happy that we had taken advantage of the beautiful weather and the guidance of an excellent tour guide,
since it was a very memorable and picturesque way to spend the afternoon. |

Puerto Varas is the city of roses, and on clear days you can enjoy the view of 3 different volcanos across the
largest lake in Chile.
| We enjoyed walking around and eating kuchen in this area that was originally settled by Germans. Others enjoyed
the beach. |
