Our trip to Bariloche

The multi-leg adventure on 4 buses and 3 boats started in Chile, early in the morning, and reached Argentina after dark. First stop, on the way to Petrohué, these falls at Chile's first national park.

The journey continued over a series of lakes and mountain passes as we passed through this picturesque wilderness border area between Chile and Argentina. The sizes of boats and buses varied along the way, depending on whether people took partial trips, as we had when Pat and Dave visited us in 2001 (a new page will open), or whether they went the entire distance to Bariloche.

We took an area tour the next morning in Bariloche. A highlight was this ride on this chair lift to the top of a mountain that afforded some marvelous views. Though this was in mid summer, it was cold even at the bottom.

At the top it snowed! A rainbow and beautiful views were our rewards for braving the cold.

Bariloche is often likened to a Swiss village, nestled in the mountains on a beautiful lake. It is also famous in South America for its chocolates.
We could easily understand why numerous shops offered to rent winter clothes! But don't worry, we didn't need to rent them. The weather became pleasant and mild.

We enjoyed wandering around and shopping. The exchange rate was very much in our favor! The shopping was so good, in fact, we had to buy an extra bag to carry home our purchases. In case you are wondering, no, it wasn't because of our buying too much chocolate! We also bought sweaters, t-shirts, and a huge sheepskin rug.
In keeping with the Swiss theme, one often sees St. Bernard dogs. Their owners charge tourists for photographs with the dogs.

We didn't go to Bariloche just for the shopping or for the wonderful scenery (or even to experience winter weather in the middle of the summer!), but to visit Cristián at the Festival and International Seminar of Baroque Music, and to enjoy their performance. Taking advantage of a nice package tour that Lan Chile offered, we had a good vacation. On the final day we traveled by bus to Puerto Montt, Chile, to catch our plane back to Santiago. It was amazing to ride through such a vast wilderness area full of beautiful lakes and mountains with very few signs of people.

Check out the link for Camping Musical Bariloche back on the home page to see more photos of the Bariloche area. Also available in Spanish, these are pages that I created right after we got back so Cristián and his girlfriend Antonia could show some pictures to their friends and family.
